3 Tips For Getting The Most Out Of Your Career Coaching Sessions

Posted on: 17 June 2017

If you are unhappy with your current job, you may have decided to hire a career coach to help you make changes. If so, use the following three tips before and during your coaching sessions to get the most out of them.

Write Down Your Main Goal

Before you first meet with your career coach, sit down and think about what your main objectives are for seeking career counseling. Having a clear picture of what you want to achieve can help both you and your coach direct the sessions towards your main goal.

For example, if you are completely dissatisfied with your new career, you may want guidance towards finding a different one. In this case, the sessions would steer towards helping you find out what you want to do with your life and the steps needed to get there.

However, if you love your career but are hoping to take it to the next level, the coach can help identify problem areas with your work patterns. They can also help you discover where you want to be with your job and offer a plan of action to help you excel, such as taking additional classes or creating a resume if you wish to work for another company.

Organize What You Need Before Each Session

At the end of the previous session, you and your coach will likely discuss what will be covered in the next one. Before the day of the next session arrives, make sure you have organized everything you need to bring with you.

For example, if your coach is going to help you write a new resume, gather together any information you may require. This information may include previous employers, your educational background, certifications, and anything that could make you stand out from other potential applicants.

Be Honest with Your Coach

As you go through your counseling sessions, it is imperative that you be completely honest with your coach. They are there to help guide you, but they cannot do this if you keep from them how you are really feeling.

For example, if they are making suggestions about action steps you may want to take that make you uncomfortable or less than enthusiastic, tell them. More than likely, you will not complete the steps if you do not agree with them. Telling them gives the coach a chance to offer different guidance for action steps towards your ultimate goals.

Using the above tips can help you make your coaching sessions more productive. If you have any questions or want further guidance on what you can do to increase the effectiveness of your efforts, discuss your concerns with your career coach who can guide you towards taking the actions necessary to get the most out of your time together.

Getting The Help I Needed

After spending my entire life suffering with almost debilitating anxiety, I realized it might be time to see the doctor. I was medicated almost immediately, but my doctors explained that a few pills might not be enough. They enrolled me in counseling, and I started working with a therapist the next day. It was amazing the difference that it made. My counselor took the time to help me through my problems, and within a few weeks I felt at peace. My blog is all about the benefits of counseling, so that you can experience the life-changing results of this much-needed therapy.
